1 Stevens, Wallace (His Personal Annotated Copy) THE PROVERBS TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINAL HEBREW AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED (Signed by Wallace Stevens, with His Many Annotations and Dated, New York, August 1901)
New York American Bible Society 1901 Fair
Recently discovered in one of the compartments of Wallace Stevens' mahogany secretary is his copy of The Proverbs which is lacking its binding, presumably because he removed the pages so that he could more easily mark those proverbs which he felt were of especial interest to him. 67 proverbs are marked in his hand by 1/2" vertical pencil lines in the margins. Another 18 proverbs are bracketed in pencil in his hand. Ten proverbs are checkmarked in pencil in his hand. One proverb is underlined in pencil in his hand: Chapter X, #7: "The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot". One proverb is circled in pencil in his hand: Chapter XXXI, #30: "Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised". Alongside of proverb #8 in Chapter XXX he has noted the date in pencil: "3/27/'07" "Remove from me vanity and lies, give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me. " The front blank flyleaf of this book bears his signature in pencil: "Wallace Stevens" and is circled by him, and is dated August, 1901. New York. On page 95 he has written the date "August 24, 1901" Each of the pages is loose. Some have tiny closed tears. Some have tiny chips lacking, not affecting the text. Pages 5,6,19-20, and 33-34 are lacking entirely. Pages 11-12, 17-18, 37-38, 41-42, 57-58, 69-70, 72-74 are, for the most part, lacking small bits of text. Included in our offer of this spectacular item is a complete copy of this book of psalms, albeit one that was printed in 1903. We have acquired it to show the lacking bits of text in Stevens' copy. Provenance: Wallace Stevens>Elsie Stevens>Holly Stevens. The purchaser will receive a letter of authentication. ; Thin 64mo 3" - 4" tall; 95 pages
